South African Darren Lill secured the King of the Mountains leader’s jersey on Stage 2 of the Volta a Alentejo tour in Portugal on Friday.

Darren Lill, the 2011 South Africa road cycling champion, got Team Bonitas’ 2012 European campaign off to a promising start on Thursday when he collected two Sprint primes and a King of the Mountains prime while in a six rider break during Stage 1 of the Volta a Alentejo in Portugal.

The most important annual domestic road cycling event, the South African Road Race Championship, takes place in Nelspruit this week and top professional outfit, Team Bonitas, have left nothing to chance in their efforts to defend one title and chase two more.

South African road cycling champion, Darren Lill, started the year off on a perfect note when he led his Bonitas professional team to a podium clean sweep at the 85km Cycle Lab Cape Cobra Challenge in Cape Town on Sunday.

Seven South African road cyclists have travelled to Mozambique as part of a 200-strong South African team representing eighteen sporting disciplines at the 2011 All Africa Games, taking place in Maputo.  The duration of the Games, which happen every four years, is from 3rd to 18th September.

Darren Lill (Team Bonitas) once again justified his South African champion status when he won Stage 3 of the inaugural Tour de Free State road cycling stage race in Golden Gate National Park on Friday. Lill’s teammate, Johann Rabie finished third on the gruelling stage, but claimed the overall lead.

Lady Luck will be a mere spectator when South Africa’s top professionals battle it out at the 28^th annual BESTmed Jock Cycle Classique, presented by ASG, on Saturday.

Team Bonitas, the most successful South African professional men’s road cycling team over the past two years, has added experience and depth to its line-up by signing current South African Elite men’s road champion, Darren Lill.

A drama-filled stage eight, the penultimate of the event, saw the overall lead of the Fairbairn Capital/Old Mutual joBerg2c change hands for the first time in a week.

Overall leaders Brandon Stewart and Darren Lill survived yet more body blows to remain ahead on points after round seven of the Fairbairn Capital/Old Mutual joBerg2c that finished at Mackenzie Club in Ixopo, KwaZulu-Natal, on Thursday.
