Team Bonitas, one of South Africa’s top professional men’s road cycling teams, started its European campaign with a bang at the four-day Volta a Alentejo stage race in Portugal, which ended on Sunday.

South African Darren Lill secured the King of the Mountains leader’s jersey on Stage 2 of the Volta a Alentejo tour in Portugal on Friday.

Darren Lill, the 2011 South Africa road cycling champion, got Team Bonitas’ 2012 European campaign off to a promising start on Thursday when he collected two Sprint primes and a King of the Mountains prime while in a six rider break during Stage 1 of the Volta a Alentejo in Portugal.

Top South African professional road cycling team, Bonitas, has begun the first of two six-week racing stints as part of its 2012 European campaign, kicking off with the Volta a Alentejo four-day stage race in Portugal today.

For the first time since it was established in 2009, Team Bonitas left the South African Road Race championships with a medal. Not just one, but three, following some very respectable performances by the team in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga at the 2012 edition of the national showpiece over the past four days.

The most important annual domestic road cycling event, the South African Road Race Championship, takes place in Nelspruit this week and top professional outfit, Team Bonitas, have left nothing to chance in their efforts to defend one title and chase two more.

The addition of Herman Fouche and Ian McLeod has bolstered the depth of Team Bonitas professional road cycling team for 2012, a year that will see the top South African outfit continue to grow its international racing footprint with an expanded European programme.

The Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge is the year’s final major race. But for Team Bonitas, it’s more than just a race, it’s a cornerstone South African title that’s an integral part of the team’s annual racing schedule. It’s an important final goal. And having won the coveted event for the past two years, Team Bonitas is committed to gunning for a third win in succession on Sunday.

After splitting its squad to contest various races around the country over recent weeks, Team Bonitas, South Africa’s most successful professional men’s road cycling team over the past two-and-a-half years, will be fielding a full strength for Sunday’s Amashova Durban Classic.
