South African Track cyclists, Jessica Brown, is geared up for the South African Track Grand Prix (UCI CL2) and National Series, which take place in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, at the Cyril Geoghegan Cycle Track from 7-9 August 2016. Brown has just returned home after competing in the 2016 UCI Junior Track Cycling World Championships in Aigle, Switzerland.
“The vibe at Worlds was great. I was a little bit nervous for my first race as it was live,” she said.
Prior to competing in the World Championships, Brown along with Jennifer Abbott, attended the high-level track training camp at the UCI World Cycling Centre in Aigle, from 6 June to 24 July 2016, and her participation in the World Championships culminated her almost two-month stint in Europe.
“The Junior Training Camp was fantastic. I met a lot of riders from other countries. As a younger rider, I learnt a lot from our older athletes who are heading off to Rio Olympics."
Brown learnt some valuable fundamental lessons whilst training under the supervision of the World Cycling Centre Track Coach. “I learnt from the way that they respect one another even though they are in competition with each other. I learnt to be on time, to always be positive, to never stop training and to always go the extra mile. At the UCI, we also learnt what to eat and at what time. We were also taught how to fix our own bikes and to try do things before we asked somebody else to do it.”
Brown will also be taking part in the South African National Track Grand Prix 1 & 2 and is hoping to repeat the success of her three silver medals from the SA National Championships. “I will be taking part in the Sprint and Keirin events for the Junior Category,” she added.
Event organiser, Hylton Belitzky, was also pleased to announce that riders from Uganda and the Congolese Cycling Federation will be coming to the country to take part in this all-important UCI Class 2 event.
Rounds one and two of the South African Track Grand Prix and National Series take place in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, at the Cyril Geoghegan Cycle Track from 7-9 August 2016. The UCI CL2 classified event has Elite riders hungry for all-important UCI points on offer. A favourable prize purse is on offer to those taking part, with over R60 000 up for grabs.
