Team Contego's Philip Buys won the first race in the Momentum Health XCO Internationals this past weekend at Giba Gorge, KZN. Buys was joined on the winner's podium by Rourke Croeser and James Reid.

The event was held in cold, wet and muddy conditions. The race was very intense even though everything went according to plan for Buys on the first three laps. "I started the race fairly relaxed and I didn't try anything to get away. On the fourth lap I upped the pace and got a gap on the rest of the field."

This was the last race of the day and by then the course was very slippery. "In a turn on the descent I crashed and hurt my shin. I panicked a bit to be honest. At the tech zone I stopped to assess the damage, but luckily it was nothing serious."

By then Buys has lost his lead and was in third place behind Croeser and Reid. "It took one lap to get back my rhythm and I managed to catch up with Rourke and James on the last lap to take the victory by 15 seconds!" According to Buys it was a race that could have been easy, but in the end it was anything but.

All in all he is happy with his form at this stage of the season.  "Everything is on track for the World Cup in Pietermaritzburg."

Next up is the Sabie marathon race this coming weekend. "I don't really know what to expect because it has been a while since I have race over such a distance."
