Cyclist Rui Faria was knocked down while riding home on Klip Rivier Drive in the South of Johannesburg on Wednesday afternoon. Mr Faria was struck by a car on Kliprivier Drive, just before the panorama shopping centre around 16h30.

While exact details of the incident are still unclear Mr Faria's family report that he is in critical condition in ICU at the Union Hospital. Mr Faria sustained a broken collar bone and extensive head injuries. Mr Jorge Faria, a prominent member of the cycling fraternity in the South of Johannesburg, said his brother sustained extensive head trauma and had it not been for his helmet that the situation could have been a lot worse. "I have to stress the importance of every cyclist wearing a helmet whenever they go out on the road",  said Faria.

The incident is a setback for safety efforts in the area with locals reporting a similar accident not too far from the same spot about a year and a half ago. The Faria family have asked friends to avoid visiting the hospital until Rui's condition improves and he is moved from ICU. He is currently in a state of induced coma.
