Schoeman (Bizhub FCF) takes Optimum Berge en Dale Classic presented by ASG Featured

Anriette Schoeman (bizhub FCF) successfully defended her title when she won the Optimum Berge and Dale Classic this weekend.

The women had their own start for the 100km race and it began with a 3km climb. From the gun there were women dropped on the climb as MTN Qhubeka and Bizhub FCF went at each other. Lise Olivier set a very hard pace but was closely followed by Schoeman, Marissa Stander and An-Li Pretorius. Towards the summit of the climb there were several elite women left behind. They regrouped later to fight their way back to rejoin the breakaway group 45km into the race. With 25km to go Linn Torp and An-Li Pretorius broke away and at one stage opened up a 20 second time gap. It was however closed with 18km to go. Another few attacks and counter attacks were launched by the different teams.

The decisive break came with 15km to go when Lise Olivier launched a major attack taking Schoeman, Stander, Pretorius and Theresa Ralph with. With 5km to go it was clear that the race win would be determined by a sprint to the finish. With 300m to go Lise made her move. Schoeman followed her closely with Anli Pretorius just ahead. Schoeman managed to pass Pretorius in the last 50m to win with Pretorius 2nd and Stander 3rd. Olivier took 4th , Theresa Ralph 5th and Lynette Burger Toyota Cycle Lab in 6th place.
