In a freezing velodrome in Bellville, Bernard Esterhuizen still managed to slay the 1km time trial beating the competition by 3 seconds.

Proceedings started with the vets showing some classy work in their respective races, highlights were Morne van Greuning taking gold and Mario Nel taking 3rd in a well contested 35 -39 time trial final. “With the current form I have I am overjoyed to be on the podium again” said Nel.

The Elite men went all out in the kilo and Bernard Esterhuizen, who has just returned from the UCI School of Cycling to compete here, aced the 4 lap race. Silver medallist Jeanne Nel was blown away by Bernard’s speed and power commenting “he is a machine”.

In the 1500, Bernard once again pipped Nel on the line. The junior 1500, saw action, with Shame Pheiffer in a huge crash, breaking his collar bone, Hannes Basson was victorious through the carnage. 

The endurance races saw the return of Nolan Hoffman who played with the competition in the heats to go through the finals. Tasol had a fully charged team for the final of the scratch and points.

The finals of the Scratch was totally dominated by Nolan Hoffman lapping the field, with James Louter attacking in the last lap to take silver followed by Dean Edwards in third. Juan van Heerden was caught tweeting, when “The Hoff” is in form there is no one to touch him. In the points race the action was hot all the way, Jean Spies, Nolan Hoffman, James Louter, Evan Carstens and Dean Edwards saw to it that there was just not letting up. A victorious Nolan Hoffman deserved a standing ovation. Tasol-GT making a clean sweep on the podium with Hoffman, Spies and Perry. “I’m really happy to have managed to win my first two races back with my new team. This is my way of paying back the faith the team and Dean has shown in me up to now. I’m really looking forward to the future and some more victories.” Said an ecstatic Hoffman

 The women’s racing only saw the sprinters competing with Annerine Wenhold taking top honours in the qualifiers in 12.79sec for 200 m,riding semi finals against Magdalene Nicholson, who promised not to give up without a fight, Annerine sailed to victory. Tomorrow sees the finals with Annerine going against Maroesjka Matthee for the gold race.Nicholson will ride against Yvette van der Berg for Bronze. All the Elite Women will be in action on Day 2, With the endurance women Doing the pursuit.
