It is highly unlikely that we will see a better Madison race any time soon. The Bellville crowd was treated to an epic battle as the endurance riders went all out.

The Madison saw Team Tasol, Team Intellibus and Team club100 lap the field very early on with each sprint being contested like it was the last.  It was an extremely close call when Club100 almost lapped Tasol and Intellibus which would have put them well into the lead at a very late stage of the race. But it was the class and experience of Team Tasol that proved too much and they ended the race victorious.

Dean Edwards commented, “I owe the Hoff big time, he was like two men out there, but it was to be expected with a mere 10 weeks since my spinal op.”

Today saw Roxy Burns, a disabled rider, set a new South African record in her 500m time trial. She was absolutely overjoyed. With little competition, setting a new record was worth every hard training session.

Annerine Wenhold retained her sprint title with Maroesjka Matthee taking silver.

In the women’s endurance field, Lynette Burger enjoyed a favourable return to the track. As a first time pursuit rider she took gold while Tania Carstens turned in a surprise performance for silver. The injured Ilse Bole completed the medals taking bronze.

The Junior Sprint sees Hannes Basson up against Kellan Gouverias for gold on Friday.

Bernard Esterhuizen once again showed why he is the fastest man in South African hitting a 10.7 sec in 200m, with Jeanne Nel once again in 2nd 11.1sec.

Nel was very disappointed wanting to go under 11 sec but the track just didn’t allow him to. Friday sees semi finals and finals with  Bernard Esterhuizen, Jeanne Nel, Jean Smith and Mike Thomson all in action

Day 3 sees the team pursuits, and elite mens Sprints. Who will take the team pursuit honour.
